Bursts of heavy rain are forecast to hit Nelson from Saturday afternoon.
This morning the MetService said bands of rain with heavy showers would hit northwest Nelson as a front swept across central New Zealand.
It warned people in the area, especially those venturing into the mountains, to prepare for a spell of wet and windy weather.
Streams and rivers would rise quickly following heavy rain and slips are possible.
