Nelson apprentices have taken second and third place in regional building awards.
Blenheim carpentry apprentice Daniel Crockett won the the Upper South Island Region Registered Master Builders Carters 2012 Apprentice of the Year Award in Blenheim last night.
Second place went to Ryan Thurlow, 22, of Nelson, employed by Barnett Construction, and third place went to Dale Stacey, 22, of Nelson, employed by C F Building.
A rapt Mr Thurlow, a former Nelson College student who did its trades building programme, he said he was loving his job: "Just getting out and about and at the end of the day you can look back and see what you've done."
Mr Stacey said his was a last-minute entry so he was pleased to get his result and might have another go next year.
The former Nayland student has been building for five years and is three years into his apprenticeship.
"It's been really good and BCITO has a really good apprenticeship system going."
Mr Crockett, 22, entered the competition as a way to get his name out there and to build up confidence in his trade.
"I love standing back and looking at an exterior and knowing I helped build it."
He will now compete against regional winners at the national Apprentice of the Year competition in Wellington next month.
