It's early days yet, but the signs are right for a fine weekend in Nelson, finally.
Nelson weather forecaster John Mathieson said fine and settled weather was due for the region for much of this week, followed by a sunny weekend with even a few afternoon sea breezes thrown in.
He said Nelson appeared safe from an advancing cold front up the South Island today, which was expected to reach Christchurch later this afternoon with "colder southerly winds and the odd shower in tow".
"Nelson appears mostly safe aside from a few showers over the ranges late afternoon and evening. Southwest winds rule the roost today."
In the 24 hours to 9am yesterday Brooklyn received 22.4mm, taking its monthly total to 178.6mm, Richmond east received 28.2mm, with a monthly total of 118mm, Stoke north 22.5mm and 97.8mm for the month, Nelson (at Fairfield Park) 18.4mm and 89.2mm for the month.
Mr Mathieson said Nelson could expect sea-breeze weather for most of the rest of the week.
Tomorrow is expected to be fine with "cloudy periods here and there by day" and sea breezes quite firm over the coasts in the afternoon.
Wednesday will dawn fine and settled with light inland frosts and a sunny clear morning is forecast for Thursday, but scattered highland showers "spring to life" in the afternoon and evening.
Expect more good weather on Friday, which is expected to be fine with the possibility of inland frost pockets.
