Kids get tips from the pros
Makos mix it up with young fans at Kids DayEMMA BEER
Some small Makos fans got the chance to play with their heroes at a special type of Makos training.
The annual SBS Makos Kids Day was on yesterday at Trafalgar Park, with around 25 children getting the chance to play with the squad.
SBS banking consultant Rachel Wedderburn said it was the seventh year in a row they had held the day, where children of customers or from local rugby clubs were invited to attend.
"It's an exclusive one on one with the full squad."
Ms Wedderburn said the players generally enjoyed themselves, and the children loved the opportunity to get to meet the team.
"It's good for them, to show them that growing up in Nelson they can be a professional rugby player."
Five-eighth player Hayden Cripps said the event was pretty cool.
"I enjoy dealing with the kids.
"It's good to give something back, they come to all our games."
Tom Thornalley, 11, said it was fun.
He had been playing tackle with some of the team and said it was a pretty good feeling to get a try against the professionals.
"And breaking some of their tackles."
The children began the session with a couple of games before splitting up where the older ones played a bit of tackle and the younger ones a game of touch. Afterwards they had sausage sizzle and were given a goody-bag.
The Makos play against Bay of Plenty at Trafalgar Park at 7.35pm tonight.
