A truck and trailer unit has crashed through the safety barriers on State Highway 6 at the base of the Whangamoa Saddle north of Nelson, and traffic has been reduced to one lane.

The truck, carrying frozen mussels, left the road completely and was lying in the stream in the Nelson side of the hill. It had been heading towards Nelson at 11.20am.

Emergency services are at the site.

A St John spokesman said the driver who sustained minor injuries, had been taken to Nelson Hospital.

Fire Service Nelson station officer Kevin O’Connor said it appeared the driver had failed to take the corner before the crash. He had got himself out of the cab.

‘‘We’re not concerned with contamination of the stream, it seems that the diesel tank is intact,’’ Mr O’Connor said.

Heavy equipment would be called in to remove the truck, he said.
