No assault verdict
The case of a carer charged with the assault of a severely intellectually disabled teenager has resulted in a hung jury.
Tahunanui woman Linda Pearl Ericson, 62, denied six charges of common assault relating to a then-16-year-old boy under her care.
The jury of three men and nine women in Nelson District Court before Judge Tony Zohrab failed to deliver a verdict after 6 hours' deliberation.
The alleged victim of the assault, now 19, is one of the most highly supported individuals in New Zealand.
Former colleagues of Ericson told the jury they had seen her assault the boy on various occasions.
A call-over is scheduled for December, and Crown prosecutor Mark O'Donoghue said while he was still considering whether to bring a retrial, at the moment there did not seem to be any good reason not to.
