Free forum for supporters of disabled kids
A free forum is available for the supporters of children and youth with a disability.
The IHC is holding an information forum for families and supporters on Friday in Tahunanui.
Advocate Anne Bell said they had held around 20 forums throughout the country, and Nelson was the last stop.
"They've gone really, really well, just had an amazing response. There's a real thirst for accurate information from those who support young people."
A lot of caregivers found it hard to navigate the systems, health, education, and social development, which were not overly well co-ordinated, she said.
"A lot of people aren't aware that other supports exist in their community."
A lot of families struggled to get the help they needed or have a complete picture of that they might be entitled too.
"Some parents just haven't caught up with the new models trialed by the health system, such as individualised funding."
The aim of the forum was not a talk-fest by experts, but rather an opportunity for caregivers to ask questions and gain a better understanding of what help they could get.
"If you're not told, you might lead a lonely struggling life, and that can be quite challenging for a lot of people."
- The forum will be held at Beachcomber Motor Inn, Beach Rd, on November 2 from 10am till 2pm. To register for the IHC Heartland seminar, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0800 442 442.
