A 75-year-old Riwaka man is in a critical condition in Nelson Hospital after falling from his house roof yesterday.

St John team manager Jon Leach said neighbours called emergency services after discovering the man on the ground beside his ladder.

The neighbours had gone to check on the man after becoming concerned when they had not seen him for some time.

Mr Leach said the man suffered a traumatic brain injury and rib injuries in the fall.

A St John intensive care paramedic treated the man at the site and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter flew the man to Nelson Hospital about 4pm.

Mr Leach said the man was in a serious but stable condition when he was flown to Nelson.

The man had no recollection of the accident, but based on his injuries, it was believed that he had fallen about three metres from the roof, and had not fallen from the ladder, he said.
