A helicopter with a monsoon bucket was used to fight a blaze in pine trees on Nelson's Centre of New Zealand hill last night.

Fire Service station officer Kevin O'Connor said the fire covered one hectare. The ground was damp and the northerly wind meant the fire did not threaten houses, he said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known, but was possibly suspicious.

Four tankers, two fire engines, two four-wheel-drives and the helicopter were working.

Access to the hilltop fire is difficult and fire trucks are understood to have gone through the Maitai Valley.

The fire, noticed after 7.30pm, appeared to be largely under control by about 9pm.
