The driver of a car which flipped upside down on the Whangamoa Hill was flown by helicopter to Nelson Hospital yesterday morning.

Sergent Wayne Corbett, of Nelson, said the driver was the sole occupant of the hatchback vehicle which left the road and flipped upside down. He had been travelling from Nelson to Blenheim.

The man, a 48-year-old from Nelson, was still conscious at the scene with some nasty grazes to his head.

Speed did not appear to be a factor and it was unclear why the vehicle left the road, Mr Corbett said.

Two fire engines, ambulance and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter attended the accident about 8am today. A section of State Highway 6, at Collins Valley, was closed for about 30 minutes.
