An 8-year-old Motueka boy suffered life-threatening head injuries after his bike's front wheel fell off while attempting to jump the kerb last night.
The boy was initially treated by Motueka St John Ambulance crews and was then flown to Nelson Hospital in the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.
This morning, he was still in Nelson Hospital, in a comfortable condition.
St John team manager Gary Tobin said the boy hit his head and lost consciousness.
Police Constable Donna Bower, of Motueka, said the boy was riding on Fry St, where he lives, and it appeared he was "trying to jump the kerb and the front wheel fell off", causing him to fall.
She said the boy was not wearing a helmet. The accident was a reminder to check bikes over and always wear a helmet.
