Lost soldier spends night in park
A soldier who spent the night in Kahurangi National park after being separated from his platoon has been reunited with his NZDF colleagues.
A defence force spokesman said the soldier had become separated from his tramping party as they walked the Heaphy Track in Golden Bay at about 10pm last night.
His platoon had spoken to two passing hunters, who gave them the location of the man.
The hunters had seen the man under a lightweight tent fly, but had left him alone because he looked like he was sleeping.
Police assessed the situation and considered there was no immediate requirement to deploy search and rescue teams. The man was well-equipped and weather conditions were good.
