The owner of a kitten held down over a drugs bong is horrified, says Nelson's police chief.
The Nelson Mail yesterday revealed that a photo of the kitten had been posted on a 14-year-old Nelson boy's Facebook page.
Today, Nelson Bays acting area commander Inspector Chris De Wattignar said police had identified the two boys in the photo and spoken to one of the mothers.
The boys, aged 14 and 16, had been referred to police Youth Aid service, which would decide what action to take.
Police needed to talk to more people who were at the house, Mr De Wattignar said.
"These youths will be held accountable," he said.
The owner of the kitten was the mother of one of the boys.
"She didn't know about it until she saw the photograph in the Mail. She was horrified," he said.
Police would seek some guidance from the SPCA about the kitten's health, he said.
Complaints about the boys' actions had been made to the SPCA and the police.
Comments online from the boys defended their action by saying the bong had legal highs in it and not cannabis, and the kitten did not get high.
