The Russian-flagged Sparta, the third toothfish longliner to have been berthed at Port Nelson this year, sailed for the controversial Ross Sea fishing grounds last night. Agent Mike Newton, of Pegasus Shipping, said the voyage was expected to take 10 days.

The Sparta had an extensive refit at Port Nelson after being holed by ice a year ago. The two Nelson-based New Zealand Longline boats, Janas and Antarctic Chieftain, left in the past two weeks.
