State Highway 60 through Riwaka was closed this morning after a truck clipped a power pole and brought down power lines.

No one was injured in the accident at 8.50am although the truck's driver was stuck in the cab until power could be cut.

Constable Donna Bower, of Motueka, said it appeared as if the driver had pulled over to the left to park opposite NS Rogers garage and the tailgate had "clipped the pole and brought the line down".

Kerry Diamond, a salesman at the garage, said the driver was going very slowly and the top of the tailgate caught the pole as the truck tilted with the camber of the road.

"There was a big bang and a white light in the sky and a bit of fireworks," he said.

The truck was travelling north carrying a digger and the downed power pole narrowly missed a car parked about a metre from the truck.

Main Rd Riwaka was closed for safety and traffic was diverted around Umukuri Rd and Swamp Rd.
