Tourists winched from steep bluff
Two English tourists perched precariously on a steep bluff south of Nelson have been winched to safety by a rescue helicopter this afternoon.
The pair, in their twenties, were at Waiau Pass in the southern Nelson Lakes National Park when made a mistake in their navigation and found themselves unable to move in steep terrain and decided to activate their locator beacon.
The Rescue Coordination Centre in Wellington sent the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter at 12.20pm.
A helicopter spokesman said they found the pair perched precariously on a shelf amongst steep bluffs on the southern side of Waiau Pass.
The helicopter was able to winch down its onboard St John Intensive Care Paramedic, who was able to assess them, before the pair were winched off the bluffs into the helicopter.
The pair were uninjured, but grateful for being rescued, he said.
