A 4.7 magnitude earthquake was felt in the Nelson region just after 5am on Saturday morning.
Geonet said the earthquake was centred 65 kilometres northeast of French Pass at a depth of 93km.
It rated the shake's intensity as light.
There were no reports of damage, but some central Nelson residents described it as a sudden jolt.
The quake was felt in Wellington where some residents reported being shaken awake.
