The central area of Nelson's Anzac Park, including the cenotaph, is closed to public access because of safety concerns about a large tree.
Nelson City Council staff have inspected the trunk of a large American elm tree which has split in two from ground level up to about three metres. There are concerns that the damaged tree could fall at any time, and the decision was made to close public access to the area.
Contractors yesterday strapped the tree to make it as safe as possible. On the advice of arborists, the tree will be removed as soon as specialised equipment is available.
People are being asked to observe the closure for their own safety.
