The famous RNZAF stunt fliers are barrel-rolling their way to Nelson, with a performance in the skies above Tahunanui Beach tomorrow.
The Royal New Zealand Air Force Red Checkers aerobatics team, last here in 2007, will perform a 15-minute routine about 12.30pm.
Red Checkers team member Jimmy Davidson said the team was doing the show in Nelson on the way back from a performance in Christchurch to celebrate the Coast to Coast multisport race.
The performance would involve between one and five planes, with the pilots doing everything from barrel rolls to loops.
The group is made up of experienced air force pilots, all of whom had progressed to the instructor level. The manoeuvres were difficult, but they were made easier through extensive practice, and every flight was exciting, he said.
"It really does make you want to go to work in the morning."
The best viewing position would be on Tahunanui Beach in front of the playground, he said.
