BRIGHT OUTLOOK: Francesca Hills and Sophie Smith work on their mural design for the Maitai walkway.

The Maitai walkway beneath the Collingwood St bridge was last year lined with graffiti.

Yesterday the winners of a mural competition organised by the Nelson Youth Council covered one of the bridge's graffiti plastered uprights with bright, warm colours that were intended to enhance the public space beneath the bridge. Sophie Smith and Francesca Hills, each in year 10 at Nelson College for Girls, unanimously won the competition and have since painted most of their "fabulous" 9-metre by 2.3m mural.

The two art students said their mural was a "giant eye" representing the past and future of Nelson.

"We put the sun in the middle because sun and light generates most things, including life. Nelson is also a sunny place."
