A man moving from the West Coast to Waikanae died in a crash on State Highway 6, north of Murchison.
Police today named him as David John Cross, 74, formerly of Westport.
A police spokeswoman said Mr Cross was in the process of moving to Waikanae.
His car crashed at Glenhope just after 2pm yesterday as it was heading towards Nelson.
Mr Cross, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pulled from the wreck by bystanders, but died at the scene.
The crash occurred near a bend in the road, and the car is understood to have rolled, but police have yet to determine the cause.
The highway was reduced to one lane for some time after the accident.The Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter attended the scene on the way to another emergency at Rainbow Ski Area.
After confirmation the motorist had died, the helicopter continued to the skifield to transport a 9-year-old Nelson boy who had suffered suspected back injuries in a fall while skiing.
He was treated by the onboard intensive care paramedic en route to Nelson Hospital..
