Stanton disputes parking fines
Nelson city vagrant Lewis Stanton, who likes to be known as Hone Ma Heke, appeared in the Nelson District Court today owing $49,500 in unpaid fines.
Stanton regularly parks his horse and cart on Bridge St taking up two spaces but he refuses to pay for parking or the fines the Nelson City Council issues him.
Stanton told Judge Tony Zohrab he believed the figure was closer to $60,000, as the council continued to issue him with parking tickets.
Asked what he planned to do about the fines, Stanton told the judge: "Stop the public persecution, or resign."
He then walked out of the court.
Judge Zohrab remanded Stanton on bail for sentencing on September 24.
He said the sentencing judge would have the option of sending Stanton to prison.
"If he fails to comply with the sentencing process he will go into custody."
