The whitebait are starting to run.
Joe Kiriona, of Stoke, was one of about 20 whitebaiters fishing in the Lower Waimea River this morning.
Yesterday he caught close to 500 grams.
"I love them," he said.
He likes them in traditional patties "cooked while they are still wiggling".
He said he had been whitebaiting most of his life and finds it therapeutic.
He likes whitebaiting at the weekend, together with a few friends.
"We make a bit of time of it and have a bit of fun."
He has noticed the number of whitebaiting declining over the years with more people having a go.
The season started a month ago and it was only now the whitebait were starting to run.
"Another week or so and it will be fine," he said.
The season will finish on November 30.
