Nelson police were excited they might have found missing teen Leo Lipp-Neighbours' car after a helicopter pilot spotted a car covered in bush in the Wairoa Valley area.
Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney said the car was the same make and model as Mr Lipp-Neighbours' car, but was yellow.
Police bush-bashed their way to the car on Friday, but found it was the wrong car, he said.
The car was off a forestry road in an area not open to the public and had been there for years as the road to the car had grown over.
Mr Kaveney said anticipation was high before the search for the car last week and the helicopter pilot had made a great call by reporting what he had seen.
Police have renewed their call for more information on the missing teen's disappearance and are now treating his disappearance as suspicious.
They say information received from the public has led them to the conclusion that the 19-year-old's disappearance in 2010 may not have been an accident.
Mr Kaveney said police were continuing to investigate the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Nelson police, 546 3840. Anonymous information can be given by calling Crimestoppers, 0800 555 111.
