The Nelson region is in for a deluge today.
MetService meterologist Daniel Corbett said an active front moving up the country would bring wind and rain this afternoon and evening.
While it would ''wet and yucky and windy'' in Nelson city, in the north-west ranges from north of Buller to Farewell Spit the rainfall would be heavier with between 100 and 120mm likely.
Gales are also forecast. Across in Marlborough the wind was gusting up to 140kmh and while it would be windy in the Nelson region it would not be to that extent, he said. By midnight it would ease off and a fine day was forecast for tomorrow, he said.
Air New Zealand said weather conditions caused some disruption to flights in Wellington this morning and further disruptions were possible in other parts of the lower North and South Islands
Passengers were advised to consult the departures information on the Air New Zealand website or call the contact centre on 0800 737 000.
