Brothers share 'tried, true' drills
A new gym offering exercises fit for an All Black has opened in Nelson.
Last week Franks Brothers CrossFit, a CrossFit gym run by All Blacks Ben and Owen Franks, opened its first branch outside Christchurch, inside Nelson's City Fitness on Quarantine Rd.
Ben Franks said the brand had proven popular in Christchurch, and when they decided to expand, Nelson had seemed like a good option.
"It's a good fit too with the sort of people up there, who like to keep fit for their weekend activities," he said.
Group fitness was popular, he said.
"People don't like working out by themselves, and they like getting motivation from other people."
CrossFit appealed because it used "tried and true" exercises, like squats, olympic lifts, running and jumping, many of which he and his brother used in their training, he said.
"We like to keep to those old-school roots and just the way the classes are done, with the intensity of the workouts it creates a good atmosphere to work in."
The gym's point of difference was coaching, as people were not just put on exercise machines.
All the exercises were scaleable, meaning even people who had only been training for a few weeks could still get a decent workout.
They were out of the country for the opening, but were usually up in Nelson around Christmas and so would be visiting the gym then.
Operations manager Murray Dempsey said the new gym had been popular so far, with plenty of new members signing up.
The gym was more of a known quantity, with a more professional service, he said.
Trainers offered classes in the morning, lunchtime and the evening with unlimited access to members, meaning they could attend whichever classes were convenient to them on a particular day.
