Nelson cafes are being warned about a scam where a bogus customer tries to get refunds
A Nelson cafe manager, Beth Phipps, said a man came in and said his wife had bought takeaway coffee and food earlier in the day and had been given a flat white instead of the mocha she "ordered".
He wanted a refund for the lot.
"The girls asked him what the food was and he said he didn't know.
He insisted on a refund, but the girls hadn't done any takeaway food and coffee that morning, and they checked all the dockets.
"He got annoyed and said he'll send his wife back in, and she came in. You could tell by his 'siftiness' he was lying."
While scams were not unusal, this one took a different approach, and she wanted to warn other businesses, she said.
