Nelson police were speaking to five people yesterday after two cars were burned out on banks of the Waimea River and Motueka River.
The car set alight in the Waimea River bed at Appleby at around 5am on Tuesday morning had been stolen, a police spokeswoman said.
The car on the Motueka River was set alight earlier.
Police believed the same people were involved.
After a witness reported people running across a rural property in the Landsdowne Rd area after the Appleby incident, officers stopped a car with five people in it leaving Best Island.
The car occupants were being spoken to about the burned cars and a burglary overnight.
