Three Nelson charities received an early Christmas present from the Rotary Club of Nelson last night.

The club presented the Fifeshire Foundation's Andrew Clark with a cheque for $950. Gaile Noonan accepted $1000 on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Mike Gibson, from the Nelson community foodbank, received $1000.

The donations totalled $2950.

Rotary club members also gave grocery items from their own pantries to the foodbank.

Rotary club member Gavin Calder said the ceremony's timing before Christmas was a coincidence, but the club was "very, very pleased" to be able to help out.

"It's been quite good, especially at this time of year."
