Tourists lucky to be alive
Two Argentinian men had a lucky escape after a truck carrying a container crushed their car.
Details of the accident on State Highway 6 at Collins Valley, between Rai Valley and Nelson at about 11.30am remain unclear, but the truck came to rest on its side, crushing the back of the Argentinian's car
The men managed to free themselves, but a Blenheim woman in her sixties, an occupant of another car that also collided with the truck, had to be cut free by firefighters.
She was treated at the scene before she and a passenger were flown to Wairau Hospital by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, and their condition was not yet known.
Rescuers said the two men were extremely fortunate to escape serious injury. The pair returned to their crushed vehicle to retrieve what possessions they could.
The road between Rai Valley and the bottom of the Whangamoa Saddle was closed while the helicopter landed at the scene. One lane was later opened, but delays were expected.
