A child survived a crash on the West Coast today that killed two people.

The crash happened near Taylorville, about 10km East of Greymouth, just before 11am.

Police confirmed two people died in the crash. A child aged 3 or 4 was taken to Grey Base Hospital.

A police spokesman said it appeared there was only one car involved and it had gone off a bank into a creek.

The Taylorville road was closed as a result, with traffic diverting via Dobson.
