Nelsonians concerned about the health of the city's river are invited to a "Friends of the Maitai" meeting tomorrow.

New people are welcomed to the "gather, share, learn and take action" meeting with organiser Ami Kennedy and other concerned friends of the Maitai.

"We are looking at meeting each other and talking about what we already know and answering questions and concerns," said Ms Kennedy.

There will be a question session and an update about what is happening with the river followed by a discussion on how the river can be helped, such as using monitoring equipment at a section on the river.

Ms Kennedy said she had had a good response to the community group following the Nelson Mail's article on the group. New people had joined with ideas "on how they want to be a proactive part of helping the Maitai". A calendar of events for next year will also be designed.

People are asked to bring food to share over a cup of tea.

The meeting will be on Thursday, December 19, at 170 Nile St from 7.15pm.
