A man was assaulted in central Nelson early today.

Detective Steven Arnold confirmed that a man, in his late 20s or early 30s, was assaulted near the corner of New St and Trafalgar St.

The victim, who is known to police, was admitted to Nelson Hospital about 4am with a gash on the back of his head. He has been discharged, and police were waiting to speak with him, Mr Arnold said.

Other police officers were reviewing CCTV footage from the central city.

Mr Arnold said he was confident police would catch the person responsible for the attack.

Nelson man Nick Kemplen said he saw a trail of blood on the Riverside footbridge as he biked to work this morning, which he followed all the way to New St where he came across several police cars and detectives.

"It looked pretty vicious," he said.
