Nelson police have recovered a garden spade and arrested a man following an altercation on New St early on Friday morning where a man was hit over the head.
A 34-year-old Nelson man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft, and will appear in the Nelson District Court on January 6.
Detective sergeant Lex Bruning said the suspected assailant was identified with the assistance of CCTV footage from the central city.
However, he said it was "old-fashioned" police interviewing that led them directly to the arrest.
"We are pleased to resolve the matter quickly," he said.
"The victim is very lucky he wasn't more seriously injured."
The victim, a Nelson man understood to be known to police, was released from hospital after being treated for a large laceration to his head.
Mr Bruning said police would still like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
Anyone with information should call Nelson police 03 5463840 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
