Kevin Riley Plant, 34, has denied hitting a man on the head with a garden spade on Nelson's New St.

Plant is accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft, after an incident in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges in the Nelson District Court yesterday, electing to go to trial.

The victim, a Nelson man, was released from hospital after being treated for a large cut to his head.
