Police are investigating a spate of vandalism that has seen several car windows smashed.

A spokeswoman said Nelson police received several reports of broken car windscreens this week.

She said the complaints had been made in the past few days, and from different areas as far apart as central Nelson, Wakefield and Motueka.

It was too early to say whether the incidents were related, she said.

"That's what police are investigating."

This morning, more than 40 people had commented on a Nelson Mail Facebook post asking for information about the smashed windows.

A number of users reported seeing cars with smashed windscreens and dented doors in Stoke.

"I had mine done over a few weeks ago. Dented doors and a smashed window. So annoying, as it wasn't a flash car so it has effectively written it off," one user lamented.

"There's some scum out there," another posted.

"It's an epidemic," said one commenter.
