A man was to appear in the Nelson District Court later today on charges in relation to the stabbing of a man on a fishing boat at Port Nelson early this morning.

The man, who was a crew member on the vessel, was taken to Nelson Hospital with serious injuries and underwent surgery for his wounds this morning.

A Nelson police spokesperson said police were called to the Vickerman St site around 3.30am today. The incident happened on a fishing vessel berthed at the wharf.

A 30-year-old man who was also a crew member on the vessel, has been arrested in relation to the incident, and was likely appear in the court later this afternoon. The exact charge or charges he will be facing are yet to be confirmed, police said.

They are not seeking anyone else in relation to the matter.
