A farm manager who died this week in the remote, west coast farming community of Rakopi, Golden Bay, has been described by a mate as a "gentle giant".

Alistair John Pearson, 50, of Paturau, was found dead near his quad bike on Wednesday morning in Rakopi.

Mr Pearson was the manager of the farm and it is understood he had lived in the area for about 10 years.

The manager of a neighbouring farm, Tony Watson, said Mr Pearson always had time for a good chat.

"He was a nice guy. He was very quiet and kept to himself. He was a gentle giant, especially around kids, who really liked him," said Mr Watson.

Mr Watson said he and Mr Pearson also worked together as honorary fishery officers.

Police could find no evidence of an accident after he was found dead near his quad bike.
