Police are seeking help to identify a man found dead on a Nelson road this morning.
The body was found by a member of the public on Whakatu Drive, in Stoke, just after midnight.
A police spokeswoman said it was found near the Nayland Rd bridge.
"At this stage we're not ruling out anything. We're just conducting inquiries,"she said.
A man who spoke to The Nelson Mail this morning said he saw a man matching the police description walking along Whakatu Drive about 9.45pm last night.
Brian Winstanley feared the man would be run over when he saw him walking along the motorway near Monaco.
He said the man was near the Songer St intersection when he passed him.
There was not much traffic around and visibility on the road was poor, he said.
"He was wearing dark clothes and it was p...... down with rain."
He said it was a "bloody dangerous" road to walk along, and he would not be surprised if the man was hit.
Police said the man was believed to be aged between 18 and 30 years and was described as European, of slim build and 172 centimetres tall.
The man also had short brown hair with a "ginger tinge", a silver stud in his left ear and was wearing a red checked light-weight shirt and black Adidas track pants with white stripes down each leg.
He had no tattoos, and was not wearing any socks or footwear when he was found.
Anyone with information was asked to contact Nelson police on 03 546 3840.
