Police have identified the man who was found deceased in Stoke in the early hours of Monday morning and have notified the next of kin.
He was Geoffrey Nigel King, aged 44, of Stoke.
His body was found by a member of the public near Nayland Bridge on Whakatu Drive, in Stoke, just after midnight.
Police said they had many calls from members of the public about the body, and his death was not being treated as suspicious.
It has been referred to the coroner.
A police spokesperson said Mr King had not been walking along the motorway, as a passing motorist had reported to the Nelson Mail on Monday.
