Victory Primary School has a new principal.

Yesterday the school's board of trustees announced the appointment of Helen Taylor-Young as the new principal. She will move from Christchurch to take up the role.

Ms Taylor-Young has most recently been working for the Ministry of Education providing professional support to schools to improve student achievement.

She was raised in Nelson and attended Nelson Central School, Nelson Intermediate School and Nelson College for Girls.

"I am very excited to be returning to Nelson and to have this opportunity to lead Victory Primary School," she said.

Victory's previous principal Mark Brown resigned last November to become the principal of Newtown School in central Wellington.

Victory board chairperson Helen Watson said the board conducted interviews for the Victory principal role over the weekend.

"We interviewed a very strong field of applicants. However, after much discussion we decided Ms Taylor-Young was the best person to lead our school forward. The board's decision was unanimous.

"We are proud that our process has been inclusive of the views of the broader Victory community".

She said the start date was yet to be confirmed, but expected it to be in term two.
