A Nelson tourist company has expanded its portfolio of business interests by actively seeking a share in a Mapua stronghold business.

Peter and Georgina Pattullo who own Tasman Bay Backpackers hostel in Nelson and UBike Cycle Hire have bought a majority share in The Smokehouse, which includes the wholesale smoked fish operation, a fish and chip takeaway and deli outlet on the Mapua wharf.

The Smokehouse was set up more than 20 years ago by local identity Dennis Crawford, who still lives on his boat in the Mapua estuary.

The Pattullos bought the stake in the business off David Endersby and Julina Ismail, who will remain involved in the operation. The new partnership began operating on Tuesday.

Peter Pattullo said he had been actively seeking a new opportunity and the Mapua operation was a good fit. He contacted the owners and offered the option of a partnership, and the timing proved right for everyone.

"It was an operation that some time ago I had identified. It was a good fit; it's a healthy, fantastic product and it's a great Nelson story."

The Smokehouse produces a wide selection of preservative-free fish, salmon, mussels and pate, hot smoked in traditional brick kilns and natural manuka shavings.

The smoked seafood products are sold in supermarkets throughout the country, and the fish and chips are a popular part of the Mapua Wharf experience.

Pattullo said he plans to be on site to help with the day-to-day running of the business and once up to speed with that they would look at growth opportunities.

"We are truly excited with this opportunity to work alongside David and Julina, and grow the business further. "
