A car driver was breathing a sign of relief after a truck and trailer tipped away from him on State Highway 6 on the Whangamoa Saddle.
Gold miner Ron Clark, who was driving towards Nelson late morning yesterday when the crash happened, said fortunately the truck toppled towards the roadside bank of the saddle, rather than onto the other lane.
"Otherwise he might have killed me."
The Halls truck cab was hard up against the bank and on its side but the driver escaped injury. The crash meant traffic stopped suddenly and caused two minor nose-to-tail accidents on both lanes, he said.
Two salvage trucks were brought in to remove the truck by mid-afternoon.
