A stylish collection of time-travellers turned up at Broadgreen Historic House for a picnic.

The Broadgreen Society put on a "posh picnic" yesterday to celebrate its new transport-themed exhibition, A Path Well Travelled - Moving Through History. It invited visitors to dress up in period costume that matched their vintage cars, and bring their fanciest outdoor dining sets.

Broadgreen Society chairwoman Helen Le Cren said picnickers went to "quite a lot of bother" to bring the appropriate food and accessories that matched.

"There were candlesticks and carriage clock and wind-up gramaphones . . ."

She counted 37 cars lined up outside the historic house at one point, and said it had been so popular that the society would look at repeating it next year.

The exhibition is timed to coincide with the Nelson City Council Heritage Week's Modes of Transport theme. It will run until May 4.
