A man's body was found in bay a near Dunedin this morning.

Police believed the man may have got into trouble trying to row a dinghy to a yacht moored in Deborah Bay, near Port Chalmers, about midnight last night, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown of Dunedin police said.

A half submerged dinghy was found near his body.

The death of the man, believed to be a local, did not appear to be suspicious, Mr Brown said.

It had been referred to the coroner and his name will not be released until next of kin have been notified.
