A Nelson self-employed carpet cleaner now faces 130 charges of sexual offending, including 107 charges of either making, possessing or supplying objectionable publications.

William Herbert Mortensen, 53, who is known as Bill, appeared briefly in the Nelson District Court for the third time yesterday.

He was remanded in custody until June 25.

Among the new charges laid yesterday, Mortensen faces charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection with a girl under 12 years of age, and 107 charges under the Films Videos and Publications Act. Mortensen faces 40 charges of knowingly making an objectionable publication, 12 charges of knowingly supplying objectionable material and 55 charges of knowingly possessing objectionable material.

He has not entered any pleas to any charges.

Police yesterday opposed the continuation of interim name suppression and said in a press release they believed members of the public may be able to provide further information.

Police have asked anyone with information that might be relevant to the investigation to contact Detective Pat Nally or Detective Sergeant Craig Johnston at Nelson police.

In court yesterday Crown prosecutor Jackson Webber said three waves of charges had been laid against Mortensen, who faced four charges at this first appearance in January and a further 18 charges at a second appearance in February.

At a court hearing in April, the Crown said Mortensen had come to the attention of the United States Department of Homeland Security.

In January, Mortensen was charged with two charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection on a boy aged 12 to 16, along with two charges of indecent assault on a boy under 16.

Among the charges laid in February were eight charges of performing an indecent act on a girl under 12, three charges of theft, six of committing an indecency with an animal, and one charge of assault with intent to injure.
