A service station attendant was lucky to escape serious injury after being swept onto the bonnet of a car driven by a fleeing motorist this morning.

The attendant was struck at an Albany petrol station about 8.20am after a man tried to leave without paying, North Shore area commander Inspector Les Paterson said.

He said the attendant was carried halfway across the forecourt before tumbling off.

Paterson said the attendant hadn't tried to stop the motorist leaving, rather he was taken completely by surprise.

He suffered minor injuries.

Police identified the driver from security footage and he was arrested in Papakura this afternoon.

A North Shore man in his 20s is assisting police with their inquiries.

Paterson said it's likely that serious charges will be laid.
