Rugged terrain made for a tricky rescue of a man who fell while walking over shoreline rocks near Split Apple Rock near Kaiteriteri.

The 32-year-old man injured his ankle and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was called. There was no boat access and the rocky terrain meant a difficult rescue by foot.

An Intensive Care Paramedic was winched onto the rocks to stabilise the injured man so he could be winched into the helicopter.

He was treated by the onboard paramedic enroute to Nelson Hospital.
