OPINION: Further proof that the Abel Tasman National Park and its coastline are jewels in Nelson's crown has come with a recommendation to visit in the latest Lonely Planet travel guide.

The accolades are deserved, and they keep rolling in. That's marvellous for the tourism industry. It also demands great care in managing the park and its adjoining waters so that overseas visitors – and New Zealanders – can continue to enjoy it in as natural a state as can be maintained. It's a responsibility that neither the Department of Conservation, the Tasman District Council nor the tourism operators themselves can afford to take lightly.
