OPINION: Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.
In fact, with four thousand people attending the NelsonGrowables Garden Fair on Sunday, the event bloomed early and fast – even if the idea has been germinating over the past dozen years.
The groundwork was laid by a couple who arrived here from Britain 12 years ago and who had exhibited at two huge shows in that country, Chelsea and Shrewsbury. Other individuals and organisations including the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, Nelmac, Founders Heritage Park and the Nelson Environment Centre also picked up the spade.
The spring weather co-operated, largely, and the Growables crew has picked up on a surging interest in gardening both in Nelson and across the country. Not only can growing fruit, vegetables and flowers bring individual satisfaction and nutritional benefits, a more active community is also a healthier one. The Growables committee meets tonight to consider whether to run the fair annually. The short answer is yes, please.
